Rated 18

Whoooosh! I can’t wait to let out what I have in mind for this topic. To begin, Stop for a moment and think about what the term “Rated 18” means and how it has applied to you. Something popped up right? Movies with ‘eye popping’ scenes or scenes with ‘excessive’ behavior-on-display right?

The term rated 18 isn’t a new term at all but with this post, I hope to help it apply to you differently.

“We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:3‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

As I grew up in my community, I remember hearing things like Jo! you can’t watch that horror movie without guidance! You’re below 13! and You can’t drink that until you’re 21! or Jonny close your eyes! You’re not yet 18! That movie is rated 18 for adults, You’re a child, not an adult.

At first I’d somewhat take the caution, then being curious, I’d ask myself, what is even wrong with me having or watching it now? but as the rules persisted and my parental guard increased, I began to develop a strong hope.

I just couldn’t wait till I was 18 so I could become an adult and finally do these things that only adults are allowed to do. As soon as I turned 18, I proceeded to legally watching and watching and watching till I filled my inside with adult content that bore expressions in my younger years. This was or is probably your story too.

Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”
Romans‬ ‭12:2 HCSB‬

When I came to believe in and follow the Lord Jesus, a proper study of God’s word led me to know that this perspective of feeling that I had legal rights to certain ‘adult’ privileges had to change.

As I learned of Jesus and His disciples, it became obvious to me that whether I was 1, 7, 18, or 50yrs old, There were certain things that my Lord wanted me to set my mind on and there were other things Jesus didn’t want me to set my mind on (Col 3:3) In fact he wanted me to guard my mind against them because He knows that what I let in will flow out.

In today’s society, it may seem hard to guard you mind content inspired by the flesh but that’s just what it is… it’s hard but not impossible. The perks of this walk with God is that we have Gods people with whom we can have accountability and access to God’s Strength, Gods spirit, By Him we can say “I CAN DO ALL THINGS”

Now, when you think of the term rated 18, I hope you don’t let it apply in the sense that you find yourself to be old enough to let those content into your mind. Instead I hope you find yourself old enough to guard your heart from them.

Let me leave you with these words from Paul, the Apostle

“Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship.
‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:1 HCSB‬‬

Amen
